HDH: Summer Session and Fall Quarter 2023 Updates

Last updated: June 29, 2023

The UC San Diego Return to Learn program has been discontinued. It began in May 2020 as a strategic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, UC San Diego was able to resume full on-campus operations in Fall 2021 and has served as a best practice model for other institutions. Based on this, we will now be adopting current COVID-19 regulations as outlined by Cal/OSHA. We will also continue to use all that we have learned over the last few years while embracing more personal responsibility for our individual health and well-being. For more details, please visit the COVID-19 Campus Resources and Guidelines page.

How many students are assigned to a bedroom?

Residence hall (suite) and apartment assignments are at double and triple occupancy. There are also a limited number of single occupancy bedrooms throughout our undergraduate communities.

What if students are required to vacate campus due to the pandemic?

If public health considerations cause the university to request students to vacate on-campus housing, students will not be responsible for the unused portion of their housing and dining contracts. Should this be necessary, we will work with students based on their personal circumstances.

Are residential students assigned housing based on vaccination status?

Housing assignments are not based on vaccination status. The scientific modeling demonstrates a higher risk of viral infections on campus if unvaccinated students are housed together.

Roommates/apartment mates should not ask one another of their vaccination status. Room moves based on a student’s roommate’s known or unknown vaccination status will not be considered.

What if my roommate is not vaccinated?

The science modeling has shown that there is a low risk of transmission if vaccinated and unvaccinated students are roomed together. Housing all unvaccinated students solely together would increase risk of infections.

Can I change rooms if my roommate/apartment mate is not vaccinated?

HDH will not consider any room assignment changes based on a resident’s known or perceived vaccination status. Roommates/apartment mates should not ask one another of their vaccination status.

What if I do not agree with the protocols/policies in place for move-in or roommate matching?

Prior to move in, if a student does not agree with the masking policy, visitation policy, roommate assignment, and/or other Return to Learn Policies, they have the ability to cancel their housing contract via the Housing Portal.

Can I choose to cancel/terminate my Winter Quarter 2023 housing contract?

Contract cancellations are no longer accepted. If a student has an extenuating circumstance necessitating a contract termination, they will need to log into the Housing Portal and submit a Contract Termination Request form.

More information about these processes and contract termination proration can be found here.

What resources are available to me?

Any student who is experiencing challenges related to their basic needs — access to nutritious food, stable housing and financial wellness resources — should contact basicneeds@ucsd.edu or 858.246.2632.
