HDH: COVID-19 Updates

In continued support of UC San Diego students, on-campus housing communities will remain open and operational for winter quarter. Students can expect to see changes, including enhanced precautionary measures, to protect their health and well-being. If public health considerations cause the university to request students to vacate on-campus housing, students will not be charged for the unused portion of their housing and dining contracts.

Undergraduate Housing Residents – Current and Incoming Students

Screening and Testing

All undergraduate students living in campus-operated housing (HDH) must conduct daily symptom and exposure screening. They are also required to participate in free asymptomatic testing once a week. More information is available on the Return to Learn website.

Sequestration Following Unmasked Off-Campus Activity
Any student who resides in campus-operated housing and who engages in any off-campus unmasked activity (sharing a meal, recreational activities, gatherings, etc.) is required to sequester for 14 days within their residential unit upon returning to campus. Sequestration requires the individual not only to be masked and distanced within the residential unit (with the exception of their personal bedroom and the shower) and to complete the daily screener, but also undergo additional COVID-19 testing on Days 1, 5 and 10 after returning to campus. Students can use the online self-scheduler to select a convenient time. Students may continue to attend in-person classes and are encouraged to visit the Virtual Student Union for daily offerings of remote and virtual engagement opportunities to stay connected. Outside of the residential unit, students are required to mask at all times, with the exception of eating and exercising, and must maintain physical distance at all times. Sequestration ends when a Day-10 COVID-19 test returns as negative.

Residential students needing to leave campus for a period of more than 18 hours or overnight will have to notify their Residential Life staff by clicking on the Housing Portal and going to the Returning Home After Move-In link. Completing this form will also generate an email to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.

Fall Quarter 2021

 

Housing

Is on-campus housing open for Fall Quarter 2021?

Yes. On-campus housing communities and dining facilities will remain open with enhanced precautionary measures to help protect the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff.

Will there be a priority system for the 2021-2022 academic year?

In order to receive priority consideration, students must meet the admissions and housing deadlines: https://hdh.ucsd.edu/housing/incoming/pages/ImportantDeadlines.html.

Housing will be offered using the following priority order:

  1. Scholars in programs that provide four years of housing guarantee or mandate living on campus as a condition of their offer.
  2. New incoming first-year and transfer students, and returning second-year students who remained in on-campus housing for the 2020-21 academic year.
  3. Remaining second-year students. (Lottery system used to set order of invitations.)
  4. Remaining third- and fourth-year students. (Historically, we are able to accommodate only a very small group.)

Assuming we are able to offer double occupancy this fall, we expect to house Groups 1 and 2 and some students from Group 3.

When will I receive my eligibility notice for the Fall 2021 room selection application?

Students will receive their eligibility notices for the Fall 2021 room selection application in the upcoming weeks.

How many students will be assigned to a bedroom?

Residence hall (suite) and apartment assignments will be at double occupancy. There are also a limited number of single occupancy bedrooms throughout our undergraduate communities. There will be no triple occupancy housing.

When will new first-year and transfer students receive their housing assignment?

Room assignments will be available late August via the Housing Portal.

What if students are required to vacate campus due to the pandemic?

If public health considerations cause the university to request students to vacate on-campus housing, students will not be responsible for the unused portion of their housing and dining contracts. Should this be necessary, we will work with students based on their personal circumstances.

Will canceling my 2021-2022 housing contract impact my financial aid?

If a student cancels their 2020-2021 housing contract and receives financial aid, this could result in a reduction to the cost of attendance and a reduction to their financial aid. Notify the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office of your new housing arrangements. If you are living off campus, you may need to submit a copy of your lease agreement. Can I choose to cancel my Fall Quarter 2021 housing contract?

If you would like to cancel your Fall Quarter 2021 housing contract, please log in to the Housing Portal and submit a 2021-2022 Housing Cancellation request.

If I cancel my housing contract for Fall Quarter 2021, will I still have the opportunity to live on campus in future quarters?

You will be able to apply to the waitlist for a future quarter during academic year 2021-22 with priority based on space availability.

Spring Quarter 2021

 

Housing

What will on-campus housing look like for spring quarter?

We will remain at single occupancy for Spring Quarter 2021. All rooms will continue to be billed at the double room rate.

Will canceling my 2020-2021 contract impact my financial aid?

If a student cancels their 2020-2021 housing contract and is on financial aid, this could result in a reduction to the cost of attendance and a likely reduction to their financial aid. Please visit the COVID-19 and Impact on Financial Aid and Scholarships page for more information.

Can I choose to terminate my Spring Quarter 2021 housing contract?

Students who have an extenuating circumstance necessitating a contract termination will need to log in to the Housing Portal and submit a 2020-2021 Housing Contract Termination Request form. The request will be reviewed along with any accompanying documentation and a decision will be sent to the student within three (3) business days. 

Can I have visitors in my suite or apartment?

Visitors to residential units are not allowed. This restriction does not apply to necessary caregivers.

What additional precautionary measures will the campus make to support additional housing?

In addition to current enhanced precautionary measures, the campus will be increasing asymptomatic testing, moving from twice a month to weekly, as well as increasing the scale of wastewater monitoring by increasing the frequency and number of monitoring stations on campus.

Winter Quarter 2021

Housing

 

Isolation Housing

What happens if a student tests positive?

In the event a student living in on-campus housing tests positive at any time during the academic year, they will be moved to designated on-campus isolation housing, where basic needs will be met and food will be delivered to the unit. They will also receive care from Student Health and Well-being Services.

Will a student be charged for isolation housing?

Students with an on-campus housing contract will not be charged for isolation housing. Students will be charged for meals and market orders delivered to their isolation housing. 

How will a student be charged for their meals in isolation housing?

Meal charges will be applied to the student’s dining plan. Students without a dining plan will be billed through their housing account.

What is the cost of a meal?

Meals will be delivered to isolation housing and cost $8 for breakfast, $11 for lunch and $11 for dinner.

Enhanced Precautionary Measures

What enhanced precautionary steps are being taken in residential areas?

Students will be required to wear a face covering outside of their apartment or suite. Common spaces (lobbies, mailrooms, study rooms, etc.) will be marked with physical distancing aids that are at least 6 feet apart to avoid congestion. Building access will be restricted to residents only.

Public areas (lobbies, meeting rooms, study rooms, laundry rooms, restrooms, etc.) and high-touch areas (door handles, elevator buttons, etc.) will be disinfected daily and frequently. Indoor public areas and dining facilities will use a cleaning system that pairs an electrostatic sprayer with disinfectants and sanitizers. Hand sanitizer will be available at various entry points, dining facilities, study and other public areas. All buildings with forced air heating and/or cooling will receive filter upgrades to help decrease the risk of airborne infection transmission by limiting the distribution of aerosols and the risk of COVID-19 transmission through the air.

Dining

Are dining facilities and markets open for spring quarter?

Yes. Dining facilities and markets are open. Seating options in dining facilities will be based on San Diego County Public Health orders. Entry into facilities will be controlled to limit crowds and facilitate physical distancing. Hand sanitizer dispensers will be placed at the entrance of all dining facilities and markets. Physical distancing aids will be placed at food platform queue lines and facility entry points to avoid congestion. All payments will move to cashless transactions and near-field communication card readers for reduced contact at point of sale for students and employees.

Will mobile ordering be available for spring quarter?

Yes. Students will be able to utilize Dining Services’ robust mobile ordering platform, Triton2Go, to place their orders in advance to help limit crowds and wait time.

Maintenance and IT Services

Can I still submit a Fix-It request for maintenance and/or IT assistance?

Yes. Maintenance and IT personnel will continue to respond to all requests with the added precaution of using PPE and maintaining physical distance (at least 6 feet) while service is conducted. Contractors will be expected to adhere to prevailing COVID-19 directives.

Is there enough bandwidth for me to take my classes from my room?

Yes. Residential networks were upgraded to ensure Wi-Fi connectivity that will allow residents to access classes remotely from their rooms. Devices will need to be wireless in residential areas.

Graduate and Family Housing Residents

Move-In and Testing

Graduate residents moving into campus-operated housing (HDH) will need to self-schedule for a test within 24 hours of arriving on campus.

Family members residing in a graduate resident’s apartment may also get free testing. At this time, these need to be scheduled through the Health System COVID-19 testing line at 619.543.8260.

When will Graduate and Family Housing contracts be offered?

Graduate and Family Housing contracts are issued year-round, including during summer months. Contract issuance in these communities will continue in this manner.

My rental term is expiring soon. Can I request a temporary extension?

Students whose rental terms are expiring in the next few weeks may submit a request for a temporary extension, granted on a case-by-case basis. The appeal process can be started here.

Amenities

When will amenities reopen in Graduate and Family Housing?

HDH has been able to reopen outdoor seating areas (fire pits, loungers, etc.) and barbecue grill areas with appropriate physical distancing guidelines. UC San Diego Recreation and HDH have worked together to open the Mesa Nueva pool and the outdoor gym area at Mesa Nueva. Reservations are required and can be made through recreation.ucsd.edu/return-to-rec/.

Openings of study spaces and community lounges will be based on being able to meet guidelines provided by San Diego County. Reopening of additional amenities is under regular evaluation.
